Right click on the taskbar icon, then right click on "Firefox", then click Properties, then click "Change Icon..."
Do, or do not. There is no try.

It works for me.

C:\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\browser\chrome\icons\default\main-window.ico

I'm using the main-window.ico file in the grayrest icon pack as a test image.

(Just to note, for SeaMonkey the directory location is different, .../SeaMonkey/chrome/... rather then ...[Firefox]/browser/chrome/...)
Fire 750, bring back 250.

(Wonder why the OS, 10, should make a difference?)

This does not work for me either. This is already a "quantum" era version, so it should work the same. Did they make further changes after this? I'm trying with current dev edition.

Are you using the \Firefox\ or \Firefox64\ folder?

i.e.

C:\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\browser\chrome\icons\default\main-window.ico
C:\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox64\browser\chrome\icons\default\main-window.ico

I use the application folder of dev edition, and within .\browser\chrome\icons\default\. (Not using a portable version.)

It doesn't work here in Firefox 82.

Window icons
http://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Archive/Mozilla/XUL/Window_icons

Test icons
http://searchfox.org/mozilla-release/search?path=.ico%24

Reference
http://searchfox.org/mozilla-esr60/search?q=NS_LITERAL_STRING%28%22default%22%29
http://searchfox.org/mozilla-release/search?q=u%22default%22_ns
http://searchfox.org/mozilla-release/source/browser/config/version.txt

The app_dir is "AChrom" or "NS_APP_CHROME_DIR" in the source code.

i.e. C:\FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox\browser\chrome

The feature doesn't seem to be ripped out.

Found what happened to it. It was disabled in Firefox 67.
But fortunately they added a preference override: toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.windowIcon needs to be true.

One less problem to deal with.

Although it was more useful to have different icons for different profiles, though I guess that's lost now since the addon to do that doesn't install anymore.
