TB 38.0.1 will most likely be released to the update channel within the next 24 hrs with a minimal throttling value. IOW you will have to use Help>>about Thunderbird to get the update.

Just downloaded installed with no issues and Lightning still works (once I finally remembered what password I used for my Google Calendar). So what does that mean for June 30th? Will there be a 38.0.2 or will that release be lined up with the August 11th Firefox release or is Thunderbird going to be on its own release cycle independent of Firefox now?

The delay was caused by some late patches and build issues, thus Thunderbird 31.7.0 was released instead of the 38.0.0 initially planned, and this is now 38.0.1 "dot" release. I'd expect the next release, 38.1.0 by that counting, occur around the same time as Firefox 39.0.0 hits the releases.

Is 38.0.1 available via Auto Update?. When I start my TB (31.7.0) and goto TB->About TB, I get the message "TB is up to date"?. I'm on the Release Update Channel. Thanks

Yes, it is available via Auto Update. This was tested for all platforms by the QA team and was working. Automatic updates are not yet enabled at this time. I assume it will take a bit of time until it is available via Auto Update.

The actual push to the release channel was at 2:49 PM eastern time today There were a lot of organizations that jumped the gun.
BTW if you have the extra folder columns addon installed, you will see a glitch in the Folder Pane The addon is incompatible with TB 38 because extra folder columns is now native to TB code. Just de-install the addon and all is well.
EDIT Oh the updates are fully throttled, so you will have to use Help>>About Thunderbird to get the update.

Well this is odd. Far as I know both my machines were on Thunderbird 31.6.0 (laptop for sure as I just fired it up to install Widows Updates) and when I did Help > About Thunderbird on the desktop, nothing (which was why I manually updated). Just did it on the laptop and was offered Thunderbird 31.7.0 which as far as I know was never offered to me. But then again my school schedule got really weird in May so the last time I know for sure I was using the laptop was May 4th (good week before 31.7.0 was released). I've had it on a couple times since but may be didn't try to update. Checked again after installing 31.7.0 was offered 38.0.1.Just looked at the update history for Thunderbird on the desktop and see I did install 31.7.0 on May 19th. Nonetheless, I am a little less confused now knowing that 31.7.0 was suppose to be 38.0.0.

Thunderbird was "lucky" that the ESR branch has two cycles overlap, thus security issues could be fixed with the 31.7.0 release while the first 38.x was finalized.
