jsjag,
As mentioned, you have only provided 1 point of a multi-point graph - 155,000. You might want to benchmark your own PC and run Firefox in safe mode or a clean profile to remove any add-ons or other configuration issues it might have. This will show you what your system is capable of running FF at its best. You need to identify what consumes your resources - they are limited. Also (experts - correct me if Im wrong), I dont think most add-ons consume many resources as most dont actually run but are configuration tweaks. They may create a larger footprint for the basic FF program, but the problem usually lies in pages and their content that slow down FF. I think there is a concern that Flashblock stops flash from working. It doesnt. If you are interested in turning off Flash until you want to view it (very simple) you can down load the add-on FlashBlock which simply does not start flash until you tell it to do so on the webpage. A Circle F will appear in its place and to view, just click it. It doesnt remove or restrict your Flash capabilities. If you load 10 pages and 3 have flash objects, you cant watch them all at once, so why have them run? Use flash block and start them when you open the tab/page. The initiation of a Flash object in one page will NOT start the others. At present, I have 20 tabs open and running 96,668 K on Vista SP2 and 12 add-ons. I was born in Great Falls, Mt. My parents moved when I was 5. I found them when I was 10 - they were in California.

Next time it starts going wild I will note which sites. There have been a few times that FF won't even close correctly. I need to do the Ctrl/Alt?del and manually end FF. Plus once or twice FF caused me to do a hard close (using switch) because I could not get FF to manually stop.
FF is a great browser and I am not saying it isn't......just trying to find out why the mem use goes up.

Yes, Add-Ons can increase resource usage. It depends on what it does. IF its simple configuration tweaks then there shouldn't be much of an overhead depending on how it was implemented. But for much meatier Add-Ons like Themes or Extensions that add functionality can increase overhead a bit more. Latest: Firefox/3.5.5 - Thunderbird/2.0.0.23 - Flock/2.5.5 - SeaMonkey/2.0 - Camino/2.0 - Songbird/1.2.0
Nightly: Namoroka/3.6b3pre - Thunderbird/3.0pre - Flock/3.0a1 - SeaMonkey/2.1a1pre - Camino/2.1a1 - Songbird/1.4.0b3

The memory use goes up due to caching, fragmentation, and memory leaks (although it usually takes many days of Firefox use to see memory leaks accumulate noticeably), as it does with all browsers. If you can give a set of steps to follow that will cause Firefox to use significantly more memory than other browsers, please do so we can report the problem.

My Firefox is currently using 350k mem usage. I see that about 150k is about normal, is there any way to lower it? I swapped from IE over a year ago because of high mem usage and Firefox was never this high, but recently has been. Could it also be caused by a number of plugins and addon toolbars?
EDIT: Sorry, just reread a post further above thanks ^
