Trying to download & install FF for android on my android ver 4.4 tablet. It's older but has plenty of memory, I can download other files, but from the Google Play options to get it from Google Play store or Apple Apps store it won't download (files have been moved I believe). If I go to mozilla's FF for android download site it also 'fails to load'. Can't understand why the device won't download from mozilla's site. Weird.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mac

I have an old Android 4.4 tablet I used to use for testing. I noticed newer Firefox versions install on it, but don't run on it anymore.

I did compile my own version of Firefox 52 for Android (from the mozilla-esr52 tree) and it worked OK. It wouldn't be perfect, security-wise. I could probably send it to you (although then you'd have to trust me - so it might not be that much better :P)

Or you could get an old Firefox version: https://download-installer.cdn.mozilla.net/pub/mobile/releases

Here's the installer for Firefox 52 for Android:

https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/releases/52.0.2/android-api-15/en-US/fennec-52.0.2.en-US.android-arm.apk

It's almost a year old now, though, so you might want to get a new tablet soon.

And here's my just-compiled version of Firefox from the ESR branch (52.4.1) if you're interested. It'll show up as Fennec.

Thanks Dan, I kinda wondered Whiskey Tango ...

Issac I'll try your suggestion(s). Hard for me to believe Android 4.4 would be so out of date that neither "the browser" or chrome would download FF. I would think mozilla would make the latest FF for android work on android 4.4 or would state as much somewhere. Still think I should be able to download 'for android' on my laptop, transfer it to the tablet, and THEN get a 'fail to install' or something.

If you have to keep updating android version, and periodically increase ram in tablets I don't see the point. Might as well stick w/a laptop.

Well, thanks for the help,

Mac

Hello Emily,

I gave up. Couldn't get the installer from Issacs post to work. Guess mozzilla doesn't code errors for 4.4 b/c it's so 'old'. Using a laptop. Wish I had some useful tips.

The pros here might be able to help, depending on what version of Android your tablets are using.

Good luck,

Mac

From https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/wi ... ile-device

Firefox is compatible with Android 4.1 or above devices. ARMV6 devices and Android versions older than 4.1 are no longer supported. Installation requires about 50 MB internal storage, 384 MB of RAM and a display that is at least 320 pixels high and 240 pixels wide. You can download Firefox for Android or search for Firefox in the Google Play store.

Google stopped supporting android 4.0.x & they're considering ending support for all androids that're less than 5.0.x.

Based on that info, these should be the latest versions of firefox for those with android 4.0.x or 4.1.x+. Try them & see if they work for you.

Android 4.0.x & earlier

Android 4.1.x & later

The important part on that page is the link regarding system requirements. Since a lot of android devices do not have the latest OS'es, it helps their users to know which latest firefoxes will work on their devices.
