In order to use a new password in Thunderbird you must first update the account's password through the email provider's system. That would normally mean closing Thunderbird, accessing the account's web mail page and changing the password there. Then launch Thunderbird and when a password is called for, enter the new value.

Another description of the process is: Go to TOOLS > OPTIONS >SECURITY > PASSWORDS tab> SAVED PASSWORDS button and there you can delete old passwords. Change the password on the server (provider's web site). Restart Thunderbird to ensure that the stored password is cleared from memory. The next time you "Get Mail" Thunderbird will ask for the password and you can check the box to remember the value.
