Thunderbird is already running,

Whenever I load Thunderbird, I get a box with this message. "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. The old Thunderbird process must be closed to open a new window."
What is going on?

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_in_use . One possibility is that a "parent.lock" file in your profile was not deleted when you exited Thunderbird last time. That is a temporary file which is created on startup and deleted on shutdown. Thunderbrid looks for the existence of that file to detect if another copy of Thunderbird is already running.

Another possibility is that Thunderbird did not fully shutdown the last time you exited. Use Windows's task manager to see if there is a Thunderbird process. If so either kill it, or restart your PC.
