Running Thunderbird 60.8.0

If I have a Local folder with some unread emails, the name of the folder is suffixed
with the number of unread emails. If I delete the folder and then create a new
folder with the same name, it is empty but the number suffixed on the folder name
remains the same. The number only disappears when I click on the folder name.

Is there a way to go through the above process without having the number appear
on the new empty folder?

Are you emptying the folder before creating the new version, and then compacting that original folder?

I was not emptying the folder before deleting it.

I tested emptying the folder before deleting it and when i recreated it with
the same name, the number was no longer present. I tried doing the compact
as suggested and it seemed to make no difference - it worked with or without
the compact.

Thanks for the solution. I had assumed that deleting the folder would also delete the
contents.

It did delete the contents but not the .msf file which is a sort of index of the contents of the folder.
