On a friends machine, that I installed TB, the £ character is displayed as £ but the receiving end reads it as ? . After some reconfigs with encoding for incoming and outgoing email I decided to install his email account on my own pc. I have 4 email accounts of my own and for each one of them, if I send £10 to itself it receives as £10. But when I send £10 from my friends account to itself (on my pc) it receives it as ?10. I'm starting to miss the wood for the trees on this one - any ideas why his (yahoo.co.uk) account seems to translate £ into ? . Thanks.

Try using unicode encoding in tools -> options -> display -> formatting -> advanced -> outgoing mail (and incoming mail)

It's a well-known issue with Yahoo systems, fixed by changing a preference:
