Fx presents a checkbox with the above message whenever I save a webpage as a bookmark. But after checking or unchecking the box I can see no difference in my next save dialog. What am I missing?

The "Show editor when saving" checkbox sets the browser.bookmarks.editDialog.showForNewBookmarks pref.

The pref governs whether the bookmark panel should be shown when using the "Bookmark This Page" menu item.

The "Edit This Bookmark" menu item always shows the bookmark panel.

Menu Bar Toolbar > Bookmarks > Bookmark This Page
Menu Bar Toolbar > Bookmarks > Edit This Bookmark

Thanks, Morat, but, as I've said, I can see no difference when the box is checked or unchecked.

My supposition is that my computer is somehow defective in this respect--unless you can suggest another explanation. Can you?

Sorry, I thought you were confusing the "Bookmark This Page" and "Edit This Bookmark" functionality.

I can't find a bug about the issue. Mozilla added the feature with Bug 1459878 in Firefox 63.

The pref works for me.

That check box and pref only have effect if you click the star or use Ctrl+D to bookmark the current tab.
It doesn't have effect if the page is already bookmarked and you click the highlighted star or press Ctrl+D to edit the bookmark, i.e. this is meant to be used to quickly bookmark a tab.

Many thanks, dickvl. So I guess the short answer to "What am I missing?" is "Nothing."

You only miss something if you expect to see the dialog when you click the star once to bookmark the current tab and you need to click the star a second time if you want to change the location from the default Other Bookmarks.
