Where does Netscape store states for messages in a folder?

Composer, ChatZilla and other Mozilla applications, along with Netscape, Galeon, K-Meleon and other products.

I currently have NS 4.76. I use it as my email client. I always thought that NS stored message flags (to reflect states -- read/unread/important/replied/etc.) in .snm files. However, in an attempt to correct incorrect display of messages after I compressed a folder, I removed the folder's .snm file, closed and reopened NS and allowed it to rebuild the snm file. This resulted in correct display of messages and retained their proper states. I don't understand how that was done because I looked at folder files but didn't find any state info.

So, my questions are these: how does NS 4.x do it and whether new NS/Mozilla do that the same way.
