Having loaded the 4/23 windows build, composing new messages now uses the default Serif font and ignores the options set to the Tools->Fonts menu (which are set to Sans Serif).

This is a regression from the 4/16 windows build.

And, as an aside, is there any way to set the default message composition font colour?

I have noticed the same thing. Glad it's not just me.

... and it's still a problem with the 5/3 nightly.

I've noticed that the font size for viewing messages is always like 15 px (=too big for me). Changing the font size from the options menu doesn't work. The font name can be changed, but the size stays the same. I can however zoom it smaller or bigger, but Thunderbird doesn't save this setting.

I've put this in my usercontent.css, after everything else failed:

* {
font-family:verdana !important;
font-size:11px !important;
}

this will display the text of ALL messages in Verdana, 11px.

you have to check "Options > Fonts > Allow messages to use other fonts" for this to work.

Umm, it just changed everything else BUT the message fonts..
I tried switching the "Allow messages to use other fonts" option on and off, didn't have any effect.

Edit: sorry, my bad. Edited the userChrome.css, not the userContent.css as I should have.
So, it works, thank you!

Why would you even consider to use the OS that is older and more obsolete than your computer?
See, that's just one of the reasons why I pick Linux.

You can pretty much duplicate the font preferences with something like the following in your userContent.css. There are many other things in the prefereces that used to work in the 4/16 build that don't do anything in all subsequent builds. Other things like the Find functionality are gone too. I keep reverting back to 4/16.

As far as setting default options for composition goes (asked in the original post), there are a few preferences in recent Pheonix and Mozilla builds that would appear to address this need such as "msgcompose.font_face", but they don't do anything in Thunderbird.

From userContent.css:

body, p, div, td
{
font-family: Century Gothic;
font-size: 14px;
}

*[font-face="Sans-Serif"]
{
font-family: Century Gothic;
}

*[font-face="Serif"]
{
font-family: Geneva;
}

pre
{
font-family: Courier New;
font-size: 12px;
}

I'd been trying to get the font sizes to be smaller, to no avail.

userContent.css will be my new friend until the prefs start working again. :-}

Any errors show up in the JS console when you try to change the fonts through the pref panel and then dismiss the prefs panel? They are sticky for me using the most recent windows build.

I see no errors in the JS console. The settings themselves are sticky in the panel, but they seem to have no effect when I read a message.

Wait, the Monospace font does change fonts when I change the setting in prefs, but the size setting has no effect. I have the mail sanitizer on full-throttle also (plain text), maybe that has something to do with it.
