I use Thunderbird solely as a newsgroup reader where discussions take place. The biggest problem I have is that when I respond to another post in a thread my post shows up in the thread tree as being a response to the original post. As an example let's say there is a thread with 50 posts. I reply to the 27th post in the thread. I do so by selecting that post, clicking on the Followup button and replying directly to comments from that post which are brought in when the message box opens. Instead of appearing in the thread tree under the message I responded to my post is attached at the bottom of the tree. Once in a great while my post will appear under the post I was replying to but that is rare. When others reply to my posts sometimes they appear under my post in the tree but just as often they do not.

Bottom line this behavior can make it difficult to follow long threads with multiple people posting.

The newsgroup reader functionality has been neglected since version 1.0, they basically do the minimum to keep it working. You could file a bug report that is marked as a "enhancement request" at but unless some developer takes a personal interest in it the odds are it will get ignored.

Unfortunately I don't know of any newsreader add-ons for Thunderbird. They even got rid of the news & blog category in . Asking a add-on author to add your feature would have been the most realistic way of getting what you want.

You might see if any of the add-ons that effect replies or conversations for mail accounts have any effect on news accounts. This might occur accidentally due to the way they implemented the add-on. For example the Thunderbird Conversations add-on.

I've used news for a decade and never seen this happen, as tanstaafl says the code doesn't change much, and I don't think we have any open bug reports on such a thing Therefore, I rather doubt this is a bug in Thunderbird. Your description however does match closed bug
