OK so it seems I have permission problems installing extensions as "user" the install dies silently. When I installed digger as root I did get an affirmation saying that it had been successfully installed. I restarted phoenix both as root and as user and digger is not in the list of buttons at view--> toolbars--> customize. Any ideas? I guess I need some pointers here.

Tks, Ernie

Are you using the Phoenix version? Is it chmodded correctly?

I'm getting the feeling we're having a regression under way in terms of extension installs in Linux. I'm sure this didn't used to happen (eg, I think one used to be able to install extensions as root and use them as any other user).

See this thread for a solution:

I'm new to Phoenix. I also tried to install the digger extension but although it said it had installed correctly when I was running Phoenix as root it didn't show up for the toolbar. The Googlebar extension also failed to appear.
